What are Network Services?

Some people aren’t familiar with what a network service is, but that is perfectly alright. A Network Service is a name for a set of features implemented in most modern Internet Relay Chat networks. Services are automated bots with special status which are generally used to provide users with access with certain privileges and protection. They usually implement some sort of login system so that only people on the access control list can obtain these services.

What is ChanServ?

ChanServ is a channel service bot and is used to protect channel operators and help run the channel. This is convenient for the operators because they do not need to have an operator on the channel all of the time to keep their status. ChanServ allows you to register and control various aspects of channels. ChanServ can often prevent malicious users from “taking over” channels by limiting who is allowed channel operator privileges.

Note: Any channel which is not used for 14 days (i.e. which no user on the channel’s access list enters for that period of time) will be automatically dropped.

What is NickServ?

This service is intended to provide a way for IRC users to ensure their identity is not compromised. It is NOT intended to facilitate “stealing” of nicknames or other malicious actions.

Note: Nicknames that are not used anymore are subject to the automatic expiration, i.e. they will be deleted after 21 days if not used.
